“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
– Desmond Tutu
This song was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George Floyd. We recorded with “I Can’t Say Nothing” in collaboration with Rissi Palmer and Kevin Kaze4Letters.
A note from Lizzy: 'When I wrote this, I was thinking of white people who feel uncomfortable talking about race, or don’t know where to start. As a white person, I may never completely understand the experience of a person of color. But I can learn and become attuned to the effects of racism in everyday environments. Staying silent out of guilt or discomfort doesn't work. We need to have these conversations with ourselves and in our communities."
Recorded in Chapel Hill, NC, with co-production by Kevin Kaze Thomas and mixing and mastering by Jason Richmond (Avett Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, Branford Marsalis), I Can’t Say Nothing reflects this unique time in our collective history.
Since forming in 2016, Violet Bell has performed over 400 shows all over North America. In 2020 they planned to tour in Kuwait, Bermuda, Germany, and the UK as cultural ambassadors for the US State Department. Like so many artists, their touring schedule was abruptly stopped by Covid-19, and they turned to home recording, livestreaming, and sharing their works-in-progress on Patreon.
I Can’t Say Nothing and River are their first two releases recorded entirely from their home studio.
